Amatsuki is the tale of Tokidoki, an average Japanese student who happens to have a weakness in Japanese history. Not surprisingly, he fails his last test and he needs remedial lessons in history 101. Utilizing state-of-the-art virtual-technology at the local museum, he travels back to a simulation of the Edo Period.
That's when things go horribly wrong. After meeting Nue (a mysterious being that rides an enormous monster), he loses the sight in his right eye and comes to the sudden realization that he's no longer wearing goggles - and to the shocking revelation that he can't escape this virtual dungeon.
Through some incident, Tokidoki meets with Shinonome Kon, another person in the same predicament as he and Kuchiha, a female samurai. Together, this band of unlikely comrades set off to search for answers and discover the true meaning of 'failing at history'.
